How to Photograph Furniture for a Valuation

When you sell used furniture, your photos do the talking. A buyer who can see your pieces clearly — the material, the condition, the details — can make a confident offer quickly. Blurry, dark, or misleading photos slow everything down and usually lead to a lower, more cautious offer.

You don’t need a fancy camera. Your phone is more than enough. You just need to know what to capture and how. Here are nine practical tips.

1. Use Natural Daylight

The single biggest upgrade to your photos costs nothing: daylight. Photograph furniture during the day with curtains open and room lights on. Natural light shows true colours and textures — a beige sofa photographed under warm yellow bulbs can look dirty when it isn’t, and damage hides in shadows.

Avoid using flash, which washes out detail and creates harsh reflections on glass, marble, and glossy finishes.

2. Clear the Clutter First

Remove everything from and around the piece: cushions’ remote controls, the pile of laundry on the bed, books on the shelves, items on the coffee table. A buyer wants to see the furniture, not your belongings. Clear surroundings also make the piece look better — and better-looking pieces get better offers.

3. Capture the Full Piece, Straight On

For each item, take one clean shot showing the entire piece from the front, framed straight — not at an angle, not cropped. Stand back far enough to fit it all in. This is the “hero shot” that gives the buyer their first impression and a sense of scale.

For sets (dining tables with chairs, bedroom sets), take one photo showing everything arranged together, plus individual shots of the main pieces.

4. Photograph From Multiple Angles

After the straight-on shot, capture the sides and back. The back of a sofa, the side profile of a wardrobe, the underside edges of a table — buyers check these for a reason. Pieces that look perfect from the front sometimes tell a different story from behind, and showing all angles upfront builds trust.

5. Get Close-Ups of the Material

Zoom in on what the piece is actually made of: the fabric weave of a sofa, the grain of a wooden table, the texture of leather, the finish on a wardrobe door. Material close-ups help buyers confirm quality — real wood grain, genuine leather, and solid construction are visible up close and genuinely support a stronger valuation.

6. Photograph Damage Honestly

This is the tip sellers resist most — and the one that matters most. Photograph every stain, scratch, tear, chip, and wobble, clearly and closely. Honest damage photos do two things: they let the buyer make a firm offer instead of a cautious one, and they prevent nasty surprises at collection that could reduce or cancel the deal.

A small stain photographed clearly might cost you a little. The same stain discovered at collection could cost you the whole sale. Honesty pays.

7. Include Brand Labels and Details

Check for brand labels, tags, or stamps — usually under cushions, on the back panel, inside drawers, or beneath the piece. Photograph them. A visible brand name helps the buyer identify build quality and value your furniture accurately. Also capture any distinctive details: dovetailed drawers, solid brass handles, mechanism labels on recliners.

8. Show Scale

Buyers need to understand size. If you know the dimensions, include them in your message (length × width × height is ideal for larger pieces). In photos, everyday objects nearby — a doorway, a standard cushion — give a natural sense of scale. For beds, state the size clearly: single, double, queen, or king.

9. Check Before You Send

Before hitting send, quickly review your photos:

  • Is the whole piece visible and in focus?
  • Is the lighting bright and natural?
  • Did you include the damage close-ups?
  • Are there 4–6 photos per main piece (not 20 near-duplicates)?

A tight set of clear photos beats a flood of blurry ones every time.

The Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Night-time photos under yellow lighting — colours distort and damage hides
  • Cluttered backgrounds — distract from the furniture
  • Only photographing the good side — the buyer will find the bad side eventually
  • Heavy filters — they misrepresent colour and condition
  • Screenshots of old photos — take fresh ones; buyers can tell
