Preparing Furniture for Collection

Light-wood sliding-door wardrobe with matching tall cabinet in a bright bedroom — we buy used wardrobes across the UAE

You’ve accepted an offer and agreed on a collection time. Now a little preparation makes pickup day fast, smooth, and drama-free — for you and the collection team. Here’s everything to have ready.

1. Empty Everything

This is the big one. Before collection day:

  • Empty all drawers, cupboards, wardrobes, and shelves — completely
  • Remove mattresses from bed frames (unless the mattress is part of the sale)
  • Take everything off shelves, desks, and table surfaces
  • Check hidden spots: under-bed storage, ottoman interiors, the back of wardrobes, filing cabinet drawers

Collection teams move furniture, not your belongings. Anything left inside slows the job and risks getting lost or damaged.

2. Keep Fittings Together

Beds, wardrobes, wall units, and workstations often travel better partially dismantled — and every screw matters for reassembly. As pieces come apart (or before the team arrives, if you’ve agreed to pre-dismantle):

  • Put all screws, bolts, Allen keys, shelf pins, and brackets in a sealed bag per piece
  • Label each bag (“master bedroom wardrobe”, “dining table legs”)
  • Tape the bag to the largest part of the piece, or hand the bags directly to the team lead
  • Keep wall-mounting hardware with wall-mounted units

A bag of mystery screws helps no one. Labelled bags save everyone time.

3. Disconnect and Detach

  • Electronics: Unplug and remove anything attached to TV units, desks, or entertainment centres — consoles, routers, cables
  • Wall-mounted items: If we’ve agreed the team removes a wall-mounted TV unit or shelf, clear the area around it; if you’re removing it yourself, do it before they arrive
  • Mirrors and glass: Note which pieces have glass components so they get handled with extra care

4. Clear the Route

Walk the path from each piece of furniture to your front door — then to the elevator, staircase, or building exit:

  • Move obstacles: shoe racks, plants, small tables, children’s toys
  • Measure tight corners and doorways for the largest pieces — flag anything marginal in advance
  • If a piece barely fit coming in, warn the team; it may need to go out in parts
  • Ensure there’s somewhere to park or load near your entrance

Five minutes of route-clearing can save thirty minutes of shuffling on the day.

5. Handle Building Requirements

Especially in Dubai’s towers, but relevant everywhere:

  • Move permit / NOC: Confirm your building’s permission is approved and valid for the collection date
  • Service elevator: Confirm the booking and time slot; make sure you know how to access it
  • Security/concierge: Notify them of the visit — team size and expected arrival time
  • Protection requirements: Some buildings require corridor or elevator padding; arrange this beforehand if it’s your building’s rule

Keep the permit or approval on your phone, ready to show if asked.

6. Be Reachable and Present

  • Be at the property (or have a trusted person there) for the full collection window
  • Keep your phone charged and nearby — the team may call on arrival
  • Do a final walkthrough after loading: check balconies, storage cages, maids’ rooms, and the back of every cupboard

7. Agree on Payment Beforehand

Don’t leave payment logistics for the doorstep. Before collection day, make sure you’ve agreed:

  • How payment will be made
  • When it will be made (before, during, or after collection)
  • Who to contact if there’s any issue

If anything about the arrangement is unclear, ask before the truck arrives — not after.

For Large or Fragile Pieces

Some pieces deserve extra attention:

  • Marble and glass tops: If the top lifts off its base, separate them and keep any protective pads or spacers with the piece. Wrap or cover glass where you can — even a blanket helps.
  • Mirrors: Dressing-table mirrors and mirrored wardrobe doors should travel upright, never flat under other items. Mention them when we plan collection so they’re loaded accordingly.
  • Sectionals and large sofas: Measure doorways and the elevator in advance. If a sectional splits into pieces, note which connectors join them and keep those fittings with the sofa.
  • Tall bookcases and wardrobes: These are top-heavy — they’ll be laid flat for transport, so clear enough floor space for that.
